So-called predatory publishers regularly approach researchers via email to solicit manuscripts and conference papers. With the emphasis on publishing as a measure of academic success still strong it can be easy to give in to temptation and flattery but this can do more harm than good to a future career. Claire Sewell of the University of Cambridge Office of Scholarly Communication has put together a webinar that addresses the problem of predatory publishers. The webinar covers the following:
- What is a predatory publisher?
- Why are predatory publishers a problem?
- A checklist of red flags to look out for when determining if a publisher is predatory.
The webinar is just over twenty minutes long, and can be viewed in the embedded video below.
