This month in Eyes on Evidence bulletin covers interesting new evidence. It includes an explanation about what it means for current practice.
Antipyretic therapy for children with fever
A Cochrane review finds that giving paracetamol and ibuprofen together or one agent after the other is more effective at eliminating fever in febrile children than either therapy alone.
School environments and student health
A systematic review of qualitative research finds that the need for pupils to ‘act tough’, unsupervised areas, poor relationships with teachers, and wanting to ‘escape’ the premises at lunchtime are
associated with risky health behaviours in school pupils.
Physiotherapy in Parkinson’s disease
A Cochrane review suggests that physiotherapy may improve gait, functional mobility, balance, and clinician-rated disability outcomes in people with Parkinson’s disease.
Cognitive behavioural therapy for health anxiety
A randomised controlled trial indicates that cognitive behavioural therapy is effective at reducing excessive health anxiety in patients in hospital, and total healthcare costs including the cost of the
therapy are roughly the same as with standard care.
Evidence Updates
NICE has recently published Evidence Updates on:
- Sickle cell acute painful episode
- Service user experience in adult mental health
These Evidence Updates highlight and provide commentary on selected new evidence published since the NICE guideline was issued. For each topic, the evidence was considered by an Evidence Update Advisory Group (EUAG), a panel of experts, most of whom were involved in developing the original NICE guideline.
