Due to the current changing circumstances with COVID-19, it is likely that many of our library users, whether from the University of Cambridge or the NHS, may be working from home or unable to come into the library to access books, journals, or other resources. Here are some ways to maximise your access to electronic resources such as journal articles, ebooks and databases.
University of Cambridge students and researchers
- Our ‘top tips’ guide to maximise your full text access
- Install a browser plugin such as CORE Discovery, Lean Library, Kopernio, or Unpaywall, which will maximise your access to Open Access versions (or those which are free due to University subscriptions) of the articles you need.
- Make use of the vast array of ebooks you have available to you through the University, including many key medical textbooks. For troubleshooting ebooks problems, go to the University’s guide.
- For any problem accessing full text articles or ebooks, please contact the Medical Library at library@medschl.cam.ac.uk.
NHS staff
- Your NHS Athens login is going to be most helpful in getting you remote access to journal articles. If you haven’t done so yet, please register for an Athens login (use your Addenbrooke’s or other Trust email address).
- The NHS Ejournals website will give you a good indication if you have access to a specific journal through your Athens login.
- NICE Evidence Search (and Guidelines, Pathways, and the BNF) is a great resource full of NHS-accredited material about diseases, conditions, treatment and care pathways — no login required, and you can access it from anywhere.
- For any problems accessing full text journal articles, please contact the Medical Library at library@medschl.cam.ac.uk.
Remember, the Medical Library is here to help — email is the quickest and most efficient way to reach us with all your ebooks, ejournals, and other questions.
